Global ROWS market worth over US$ 24 billion up to 2026

Amsterdam, NL - November 08, 2018 -

The global ROWS market offers great opportunities and a high competition. It is valued at US$ 1,682 million in 2018 and grows at a CAGR of 8.7% to 2026.

Remotely Operated Weapon Stations have been in use for almost two decades, competing against gun cupolas. The recent major combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan proved their major and distinct advantages over other solutions, and helped towards their proliferation.

Nevertheless, the latest technological developments in the C4ISR and unmanned systems domain will further accelerate the introduction of additional units. In specific, ROWS will cease from being an advanced “weapon station” and more like systems of systems. This approach can be better understood if ROWS are considered in a wider social, economic and political context, as well as under the operational and technological aspect of current and future warfare.

Political and military leaders would have to develop the necessary capabilities to operate in contingencies ranging from humanitarian and peacekeeping missions to conflicts with peer opponents. With the Cold War era approach of thousands of expensive mission-specific platforms gone by, leaders have to maximize the return of their investment and provide accountability to the democratic institutions.

Therefore, they have to spend wisely by acquiring new platforms or upgrade legacy ones so that they can operate in so many contingencies. For example, an armored vehicle could be called to protect peace in a region, without applying lethal force and a few days later it might be called to patrol in the enemy-held countryside.

ROWS can provide this capability by integrating non-lethal weapons in the first instance and hard-kill systems in the second. But in a period of “wise spending”, an army probably cannot afford to have two dedicated platforms.

Even ROWS per se have evolved to the point were they are not simply “advanced cupolas”. They became a system of systems integrating powerful EO/IR sensors; various types of guns firing powerful ammunition; anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles; counter-sniper systems; laser and non-lethal weapons. An approach, which bears similarities to the Distributed Lethality concept of the US Navy, where even support surface units will have strike capabilities to overwhelm enemy defenses.

All these capabilities are further integrated on advanced C4ISR backbones allowing ROWS to be used for target designation, counter-UAV missions, non-lethal deterrence, and transmission of live image and data from the battlefield, making network-centric warfare a reality.

However, the real revolution will come in the form of weaponized unmanned ground vehicles and unmanned surface vessels. Equipped with ROWS, these systems will assume the dangerous missions and will do the “dirty job” in the battlefield. A UGV with a remotely operated weapon station would operate with Artificial Intelligence, ahead and in conjunction with a manned platform, being the first to contact enemy forces. That would reduce casualties and when operated in swarms, the unmanned systems would further overwhelm enemy defenses making their collapse a lot easier.

For all these reasons ROWS and especially ROWS on unmanned systems will bring major changes to the conduct of contemporary warfare. At the same time, the use of armed unmanned systems raises questions and concerns, not only technical but ethical that societies and the global community with its organizations would have to resolve, because this technological revolution is already on our doorstep.
