Thales to Modernise Airport Surveillance Systems in Taitung, Hualien and Songshan

Taiwan’s strong domestic air network relies on best-in-class technology to keep it ahead of the curve. With IATA predictions that domestic travel is tipped to reach 93% of pre-pandemic levels in 2022, Thales is proud to be a trusted partner to ANWS in driving the safety and security of their civil aerospace.

ANWS has selected Thales to support the modernisation of its airport surveillance systems for the airports of Taitung, Hualien, and Songshan through new radar systems that will replace the existing technology soon reaching their life expectancy. These three airports connect efficiently to Taiwan’s domestic air travel network while Songshan in the North offers international flights to neighbouring China, Japan and Korea.

The new radar systems comprise Thales’ STAR NG primary surveillance radars co-mounted with Thales’ latest RSM NG secondary surveillance radars. This combination represents the latest in technical excellence and offers the highest levels of detection performance, reliability, and cybersecurity to help meet ANWS’ needs for surveillance and safeguard passenger wellbeing.

Launched in March this year, the RSM NG is a 2-in-1 meta-sensor, with fully integrated Enhanced Mode S and ADS-B sensors, providing faster track initialisation and detection, with the latest in cybersecurity protection and permanent monitoring for optimised maintenance and life cycle costs.

Thales will provide the radars, manage installation as well as provide factory and site training to ANWS staff for the maintenance and support of the radars and associated equipment. Upon completion of the project in 2024, Thales will be the leading provider of airport surveillance radar systems in Taiwan, supplying over 70% of ATC radars locally. With more than 900 Air Traffic Control radars installed in over 100 countries, Thales is a trusted leader in the global market.
