-The implementation phase of the Entry/Exit System (EES), the new automated registration system for the EU's external borders, has begun. Leonardo strongly contributes to the management of the security aspects of the project, protecting sensitive and critical data sets collected in the new system.
Starting on October 12, 29 European countries began the gradual or full rollout, at their external borders, of the Entry/Exit System, a new automated computerised system for the registration of entry and exit data of non-EU citizens travelling for short stays.
During a transition phase lasting six months, border authorities will start registering data of non-EU nationals subject to EES. From 2026, EES will replace the current manual passport stamping process, marking a major leap forward in managing the EU’s external borders and significantly enhancing European security. EES will be also used by the MS visa, immigration, and law enforcement authorities, while it will be likewise used by the carriers prior to passenger boarding, in line with the provisions of the associated legislative framework.
Within the project, Leonardo is the responsible contractor for aspects related to security management – from application security to overall governance –, supporting eu-LISA in the protection of the vast amount of collected data from cyberattacks, thereby preserving data integrity and confidentiality.
