Indra Group and Fintraffic ANS, the Finnish air navigation service provider, have signed a contract to deploy a pioneering air traffic control centre. It will be the world’s first digital remote tower centre purpose-built for multi-airport operations. Fintraffic’s air traffic controllers will be able to manage up to three airports from a single work position.

The centre will be located in Vantaa, near Helsinki, and will remotely control operations at seven airports managed by Fintraffic: Mariehamn, Turku, Vaasa, Kittilä, Ivalo, Kuusamo and Oulu.

Indra Group will provide Fintraffic with a complete technology platform, including its tower system which integrates all functions required for multi-airport operations into a single screen, such as air traffic display, electronic flight plans, and meteorological information. This technology is seamlessly integrated with Indra’s visual system, which provides a high-quality 4K resolution image, a natural panoramic view, and night vision of aircraft movements in colour. It also incorporates advanced visual tracking, intelligent overlays, and real-time labelling of air and ground traffic, resulting in unprecedented controller awareness and greater responsiveness.

Raine Luojus, CEO of Fintraffic Air Navigation Services, states that "As air navigation work goes digital, remote air traffic control will be a natural next step in the development of air traffic. Our customers and stakeholders require us to provide solutions for more climate-friendly and cost-effective air navigation services, and it is important that we have a future-oriented way to further develop our operations and respond to these evolving needs."

“With this project, Indra Group will support Fintraffic’s goal of promoting a more efficient and sustainable operating model by reducing intrusive elements such as servers and equipment, while enabling a more flexible and scalable model for air traffic control. In addition, we’ll help Fintraffic become the world’s first air navigation service provider to operate with a multi-airport remote tower system from day one, positioning it at the forefront of innovation in air traffic management”, Victor Martínez, Executive Vice President of ATM at Indra.

Indra Group will also supply Fintraffic with its GAREX voice over IP (VoIP) communications system, a reliable voice communication control system that guarantees secure and digital communication with pilots and ground personnel.

Moreover, the equipment to be installed at the airports in Finland will feature advanced technologies capable of withstanding extreme temperatures as low as -50ºC.

New standards for the future of air transport
Indra is continuing to expand its remote and digital tower solutions, participating in key international programs and strategic projects in Europe and North America.

In Norway, it is involved in what is regarded as the world’s first and largest remote tower centre, from which 14 airports are operated. In Saudi Arabia, it has deployed the Middle East’s first remote tower, which connects Al-Ula Airport with an operations centre located in Jeddah, over 500 kilometres away.

In Budapest, Indra Group is implementing one of the world’s most advanced digital towers, with the capacity to manage over 300 daily operations. In Vancouver, its technology will allow apron control to monitor over 1,000 operations each day.

With the new contract in Finland, Indra Group strengthens its position as a benchmark in advanced digital tower technology supporting air traffic operations in complex environments, while enhancing airports’ efficiency, safety and operational capacity.
