Indra Awarded Renewal of ATC Radars in Romania

The Romanian air navigation services provider, ROMATSA, commissioned Indra to supply radars to monitor the air movements in the area corresponding to the country's main airport, Henri Coanda in Bucarest, and two other international airports, Cluj-Napoca and Bacau.

The company will set up a station near the airport in the capital that will be equipped with a primary and secondary radar. This system's accuracy and security will make it possible to reduce the separation between aircrafts, thereby increasing the capacity of the Bucharest airport.

Indra will also equip the international airports of Cluj and Bacau with secondary radars, which will incorporate the latest technology in aircraft identification (S mode), thereby raising safety levels and agility in traffic control.

This contract has been awarded after ROMATSA entrusted the company with an ambitious project that includes the modernization of the control center of the Bucharest route and four other approach centers. This project also sees the renewal of air traffic management systems in a total of 15 air traffic control towers.

Indra will equip these installations with systems incorporating the latest developments in traffic management by trajectory-based 4D, interoperability and conflict prediction. All these improvements will facilitate the air traffic controllers' work, by relieving them of repetitive tasks and allowing them to concentrate on tactical planning. This will help traffic flow move more easily and orderly by being able to solve a number of problems before they even happen.

Such improvements will also comply with the requirements set by the SESAR JU consortium, which is responsible for the implementation of the Single European Sky (SES). Consequently, ROMATSA will be considered one of the most advanced providers of European air navigation and will be able to offer airlines a more efficient and flexible air traffic management.
