Dawn Aerospace has been selected by ArkEdge Space Inc. to provide propulsion for a next-generation lunar navigation satellite, supporting Japan’s broader effort to establish positioning infrastructure around the Moon.

The contract covers the development of a custom SatDrive propulsion system for a ~100 kg-class lunar satellite. The spacecraft forms part of ArkEdge Space’s Lunar Navigation Satellite System (LNSS), developed under the Japanese Government’s Space Strategy Fund and aligned with the international LunaNet initiative alongside ESA and NASA.

The mission aims to deliver navigation signals to the lunar surface, enabling positioning, navigation and timing capabilities for rovers, surface assets, and future crewed operations. As lunar activity increases, this type of infrastructure is increasingly considered foundational rather than experimental.

This marks the third lunar mission supported by Dawn Aerospace’s nitrous-based propulsion, reinforcing the company’s role in enabling operations beyond Earth’s orbit. Dawn’s proven radiation-tolerant electronics were first contracted on SatDrives for Blue Canyon Technologies in 2024, for two Venus-class microsatellite buses.

“This programme builds on the work we’ve already done for Lunar missions” says Jeroen Wink, director and CRO at Dawn Aerospace. “It reflects Dawn’s expanding mission expertise, further grounded in proven heritage from over 175 Dawn Aerospace thrusters currently in orbit.”

Takayoshi Fukuyo, ArkEdge Space CEO, said: “The Lunar Navigation Satellite System will provide operators with the information to deliver accurate, safe and efficient activity on the moon’s surface. We are delighted to partner with Dawn Aerospace on this mission; together, we’ll develop the core infrastructure for a sustainable lunar presence.”

ArkEdge Space’s LNSS programme is part of a broader shift toward establishing permanent and sustainable infrastructure around the Moon, analogous to how GNSS underpins activity on Earth.

By providing propulsion for these early systems, Dawn Aerospace is contributing to the first generation of lunar navigation networks and increased autonomy for surface and orbital assets.
